Pine Street Inn’s Street Outreach programs have run every day and night since they began in 1986.

Outreach workers offer clothing, food, blankets, health care and human contact to the most vulnerable sector of the homeless population: those who—often struggling with mental illness and addiction—shun shelter life. The team works to build trust with these men and women. Through these relationships, many chronically homeless people have moved from the streets toward permanent housing and self-sufficiency.

Increasingly, Pine Street’s Outreach teams are working in coordination with City of Boston to identify and prioritize individuals who are highly vulnerable and actively engage with them to find permanent supportive housing. This coordinated assertive approach embraces motivational interviewing & trauma informed care in our work with the most vulnerable homeless individuals in the City of Boston. These trauma-informed principles teach Outreach staff to "never, never, never give up" on a person they are working with on the streets.
